Furniture

While we have a great deal of experience with commercial projects (conference tables, executive desk sets ,new construction etc...), our real interest and expertise is the world of antique furniture. We have an extensive knowledge of period furniture styles, construction methods and finishing techniques. There is nothing more rewarding than restoring a nearly forgotten piece of Americana back to prominence. You can rest assured that your furniture will be cared for as though it were our own.

Finishing:

At Blue Harbor Refinishing, we offer a wide range of furniture finishing possibilities; traditional clear finishes, furniture grade painting (opaque finishing) and numerous decorator finishes such as cracked lacquer, glazing, translucent, Distress and sunburst. All stain colors are custom mixed to match original factory colors or to match other furniture in your house. We do not use Strip tanks. All pieces are carefully hand-stripped and rinsed it solvent, not water. The use of water in the stripping process runs the risk of glue failure, warping and lifted veneer. We do not use machine sanders in the refinishing process, especially over veneer. machine sanding removes the thin surface layer of oxidized wood, otherwise known as the woods patina. The Patina is a combination of residual stain and naturally occuring oxidation of the woods surface, usually imparting darker and sometimes redder values that gives the surface a distinctive richness. light to moderate hand sanding preserves this appearence.

Repairs:

We do not cut corners on repair work. All glued joints are checked for soundness. Those joints that are failing or have failed are seperated, cleaned of old glue, new glue applied, re-jointed and clamped in place. No nails or screws.

Occasionally, one or more components of a piece are missing or damaged beyond repair. In these cases we can fabricate nearly any component needed; whether its a missing chair stretcher, rocker runner, damaged or missing drawer bottom, mirror frame support or missing backsplash.

Veneer repairs are never made with new wood unless the piece itself is new. We have a considerable stock of reclaimed veneer in every commercially popular species. It is almost certain that we will have the appropriate veneer at the proper thickness to make a nearly seamless repair of your damaged piece.

We take pride in the quality and durability of our repair work. We pay special attention to the appearence of any visible repairs. Our objective is to finish a piece in such a way that the repaired section blends seamlessly with the rest of the piece. If you have a creaky chair or two, a wobbly dining table or even a puppy-chewed furniture leg, give us a call and lets talk about how we can help.
